I ride English Hunt Seat and also Western. Am now a bootie in that i have many pairs of Fryes and Ariats in my closet. I wanted a chic smooth black leather tall boot to wear with breeches and slim jeans for just casual dress and not for riding. These boots are elegant in every aspect: Typical Frye quality which is excellent. A wee bit expensive yet when compared to some Dublin and Ariat riding they are not out of line.

Here's one problem if you have either fat ankles, or inflexible feet as i do with one caused by injuries decades ago. It took me 15 minutes to get the left one on. i had to sit with my leg elevated with ice bag to reduce swelling from the days activities. Once the swelling reduced I got the boot on. The right one is not a problem. They are damn tight at first and difficult to put on. Just ordered a boot jack to help remove same!!!

Wearing these stunning boots to the Rolex Three Day in Lexington along with my cache of breeches. Can't wait.

  1. I love these boots! They are exactly what I've been looking for- a classic style that I can wear for years. I ordered a size 9 and they fit my 14" calves just fine with plenty of room for skinny jeans. The color redwood is a warm brown- not as red as I was hoping for. But it's not the cool chocolate brown either. It's a blend of rich warm cherry and brown. These boots will go with everything and i can't wait for the weather to cool down so I can wer then! Overall I'm beyond pleased.

  2. Frye boots are expensive, but worth the investment. they're great quality and you know you're getting what you pay for. They fit me as expected. i have wider calves, but these fit just fine after breaking them in. I also felt the style of having a higher outer rim on the boot makes my calves look smaller, rather than stuffed into the boot.

  4. I've been looking forever for the perfect boots and these are the ones: simple, elegant, beautifully made - just gorgeous! As is the case with actual riding boots, these will require a little break-in time; the leather is not the flimsy kind I've found in cheaper boots, but that means they won't sag as much and will last forever. The calf circumference is fine, by the way, although I'm not a tall thin person! I believe the 14.5" noted at Amazon, not the 13" some have mentioned. They are tall boots, though - I have short calves and they come right up to my knees.

  5. These boots are well made and comfortable right out of the box. A little hard to get on at first (there is no zipper) but they get easier. I'm very happy with these and expect I'll be wearing them for many years. Fast, reliable Amazon shipping as always.

  6. Gorgeous. A little small in the calf. If you have large or muscular calves, order the extended calf option. They are so beautiful.

  7. These boots are really beautiful. The quality of the leather and the style is superb. I wear a 7-7.5. The 7.5 was too big and the 7 fits perfectly. The color is very rich. The height of the boot is very pretty and looks great with pants tucked in. The style is traditional and conservative, not faddish. These will be boots I will cherish for years to come.

  8. These boots are well worth the money. I purchased them in Tan and the finish is absolutely beautiful and distinctive. There is no center seam up the front which adds to their quality look. The leather is somewhat stiff and will hold up structurally for years without slouching around the ankles. You can really see the quality between these and a typical $100-$200 boot: the finish and color are gorgeous. I normally wear a 6 but heard these can run large, so I tried both a 6 and 5 and 1/2. While the 6 gave me more toe room and was actually a bit more comfortable in the toe areas than the other, I noticed that when I walked, the heels slipped a lot (as other owners have said they would). Because the leather will stretch and because I forsaw blisters in my future if my heel was constantly slipping up and down in the boot, I decided to go with the smaller size. If you have an average-to-wide foot, I would stay with your regular size because these are rather narrow in the toe.

I am 5'4" and the shaft height is perfect: it comes about 2 inches below my knee, and doesn't hit me in the back of the knee when I sit. The circumference of the shaft is 14.75" (on a 5 and 1/2). I have very skinny calves (11.5"); combine that with my short height and it's difficult to find any tall boots that don't look really stupid on me, but these look great with skinny jeans.

These boots don't have a zipper and do have a more narrow ankle area, so they might be difficult to slide on for some. Also, I noticed that one pair of boots was darker than the other, although they were both the color Tan. I'm sure different batches dye with slight variations, but just be aware that if you order one pair in Tan and it arrives with a disappointing tint, you might try to order another pair to see if the next will be more what you were looking for.

  9. Fantastic quality boots. Day one they are so comfortable. Love them!! They were in stock and arrived in 2 days. The antique black is a little more casual which is perfect with jeans.
