Beautiful boots, just what I was looking for.
boots review on FRYE Melissa Button Knee High Vintage

So i had these boots lingering in my cart for at least a year, because lets face it, not all of us have $300+ dollars to spend on a pair boots . They were my "some day" item.
Then it happened. These boots showed up in my cart with a note saying the price had been reduced! My head started to spin and my heart started to beat out of my chest! TODAY WAS "SOME DAY"! The price had indeed been reduced on all three pairs in had in my cart.
Light Brown Brush Off Leather $148.34
Black Soft Vintage Leather $159.47
Dark Brown Antique Soft Full Grain Leather $159.47
$467.28 for three pair of Frye boots is a temptation I could not withstand. I bought all three. Don't judge me.
The week it took them to arrive (though on time) seemed like an eternity. When I came home from work to find them waiting my porch I couldn't wait to rip open the boxes! I was thrilled!
A few things though:
1. The Light Brown Brush Off Leather was much browner than the picture (which looked really tan to me), but that was a plus, I actually liked it way better this way and consider these to be my favorite. Another thing, the soles looked scrapped, like they had been worn outside. not much, but definitely worn more than just a "try on". But nothing earth shattering, and if that is the reason i got the discount, then totally worth it. Also, they didn't have the packaging the other two had. There was no leg insert or tissue paper stuffed in the toe of this pair. Whatever. If you didn't see the sole, you would swear they were brand new.
2. The Black Soft Vintage Leather pair were great. No scuffs, but these also appeared to be missing some original packaging. They had the leg insert, and the toe tissue paper, but we're not individually wrapped like the third pair (Dark Brown Antique Soft Full Grain Leather). I am assuming these black ones had also been returned, but never worn.
3. The Dark Brown Antique Soft Full Grain Leather came individually bagged, with leg inserts and toe tissue, but the leather itself wasn't as nice looking as the others.
On the plus side:
The sizing was true on all boots . I am a 5'5 tall woman with size 10 feet. The 10 fit perfect. The shaft of the boot came to just the right spot a couple inches below the knee. My feet are also pretty wide, but the width was perfect for me, especially taking into consideration the leather will stretch over time, you don't want them too loose or too tight.
The silhouette of the boot was just what I was looking for too. Very tailored and close to my caves. The heel height was also perfect for this style of boot.
So, in closing, I will be keeping all three pairs of boots and rearranging my closet to accommodate. However, if I had to pay full price, I would have fussed about the condition Light Brown Brush Off Leather, and returned the Dark Brown Antique Soft Full Grain Leather, because frankly, they don't look worth $328.00 to me.
hope this novel helped.
Season after season I have been waiting to find the perfect "riding boot" only to be disappointed by styling or quality. I have to admit it would take a special piece of footwear for me to spend close to $300. That said, these boots are what I've been holding out for!
ReplyDeleteI got the Melissa Button Boot in Black, in my normal size, and was thrilled when they fit perfectly, even with a nice tapered toe. The tapered toe and plain shaft (no ugly zipper!) give them a beautiful classic look, and the leather looks like with proper care it will only get better over the years. There is a pleasant leathery smell when you open the box, not a rubber or chemical smell.
To address the issues other people have seen:
-Yes the soles are smooth out of the box. But just trying them on and walking on some asphalt scored them up well enough for my tastes (although there is no ice or snow here to worry about).
-The shaft is a little snug on me, but I have larger than average muscular calves, and the boots still look flattering, and more tailored compared to having a loose shaft. I wouldn't be able to fit normal jeans in there, but leggings or jean leggings will fit fine.
-Also I agree that these may need an insole insert if you plan on wearing them for walking around or standing a lot.
-I didn't have a hard time sliding them on, the loops at the top of the shaft are very sturdy and worked perfectly fo their intended purpose. Removal was a breeze, I've had shorter boots that were harder to remove than these.
Hopefully that helps, I know I read all these reviews carefully before ordering, I'm glad I went ahead and did it and am very happy with my purchase.

I tried these on at a high end retailer and decided that since I'd already bought a pair of riding boots, these would be an extravagance and I am fairly frugal. But they were not to be denied. These boots are gorgeous! and comfortable. I can walk miles in them (I have the FRYE Campus boots that replace ones I had decades ago in college and they are not as comfortable as I remember them being). These, on the other hand, are somewhat more graceful and fit like a dream. They are worth the splurge, I will wear them until I am old and wizened. I already (sadly) have a big gash on the front of one and still don't care. The color is amazingly rich. I wear them with boot cut jeans, over skinnyish jeans, with skirts even with work clothes (though that's a bit edgy for my workplace).
ReplyDeleteIndulge. Life is short; the boots are gorgeous.
I received mine two days ago and sigh when I have to take them off at night to sleep. The quality is amazing, and the fresh new leather smell is intoxicating. I was worried I would have to be a tough cowgirl to break these puppies in, but they instantly molded to my foot and are oh so comfortable. I had to send the first pair back because I thought they ran big based on other reviews, they don't. I usually wear a 7 but the 7.5 feels good and leaves a little extra room for big wool socks (winter is coming). Don't kid yourself, you know you want them. The only downside is that now I have this strange desire to buy a horse.
ReplyDeleteI love the Dark Brown Melissa boots. They fit great, they're comfortable, and look fantastic. However, I ordered the dark brown boots from Amazon and received the dark brown distressed. I couldn't tell the difference at first, but it was apparent when I was at work in a different light that the color was a greyish brown and the leather was distressed. Which, I liked but it was not what I ordered/what I was looking for from these boots as I want a dressier pair I can wear to work. From the other review, it looks like she was sent the same suede boot. I sent back and reordered through shop bop (another Amazon store) and am very happy with them (they have both boots for comparison pictures.) So for the boots 5 stars, 3 stars because I was not sent the boots that are advertised, please be advised. ETA: It looks like Amazon has corrected the problem. The boots are now correctly marked!
ReplyDeleteReview of the dark brown leather boots pictured: They are a little difficult to get on at first. Usually I am a size 9 and these fit true to size, as I tried two pairs the suede and dark brown. The suede was tighter and I had to put on a plastic grocery bag on my foot to get them on the first time (then you just pull the bag off once your foot is in the boot) however with the dark brown boots, I did not need to use a plastic bag. It was snug, but I was able to step in and wiggle my foot through the ankle. Once I stepped into both boots, I felt the difference between the Frye's from other less expensive brands. It feels like there is a gel insert in the heel - very comfortable. I really like the way the boot fits on my calves, they are cut very flattering. I can wear these boots all day when I am on my feet as a 7th grade teacher. They look cute with jeans, tights, and dresses. This is my third pair of Frye's and are the only ones that fit true to size (TTS) and I like the way they look and fit the best - although I love my Paige and Harness 15R's as well :)
I highly recommend these boots, they are beautiful, high-quality and I expect for them to last for years!
I originally ordered the regular calf and I literally could not get my foot into the boot. The extended calf was a tad tight for me in the calf, initially, but after wearing them 4x, they've slightly stretched out and now they are perfect. I have disproportionately skinny ankles (to the rest of my leg) so I was a bit worried about baggy ankles, but I didn't seem to have that problem.
ReplyDeleteLove the boots - well made, sturdy and fashionable. I think they run a tad big - I am a true 5.5 and I could've gone for a size 5 as far as the length of the base of the boot.
These boots are truly beautiful. I have gotten many compliments on them so far. They are narrow around the foot and ankle so they are a bit dressier than typical boots and can be worn with dresses or skinny jeans. They are fairly stiff, although I have been wearing them for almost a month and they are beginning to slouch just a little around the ankle. The inside of the boots are pretty cushy, which makes it easy to walk around in them all day. I ordered both the light brown and the cognac. Both were beautiful (but too expensive to buy two pairs at once) so I went with the darker cognac because they are dressier and I wanted to be able to wear them to work and with summer dresses.
